Garage Door Opener Not Working: Troubleshooting Guide
Most opener failures have a diagnosable cause, and several are fixable without a service call. This guide walks through the most common problems systematically — from dead batteries to sensor issues to internal failures — including brand-specific quirks for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie.
Start With the Basics
Before assuming a mechanical or electronic failure, check the simple stuff first. A large proportion of opener problems have straightforward causes.
Power
- Is the opener plugged in? The outlet is usually on the garage ceiling near the motor unit.
- Check the circuit breaker — garage circuits can trip from motor startup load, especially after a power flicker. A tripped breaker often means no lights on the opener unit.
- Plug a phone charger or lamp into the outlet to confirm it has power independently.
Remote Battery
A weak remote battery is the most common cause of range problems and intermittent failures. Replace with fresh batteries (AA or 9V depending on your remote) and test standing close to the opener. A dying battery may still work at arm's length but fail from normal distances. When in doubt, replace it — they cost less than a dollar.
Wall Button Check
This is a critical diagnostic step: press the wall button inside the garage.
- Wall button works, remote doesn't: The opener is fine. The problem is the remote — battery, lost programming, or a faulty remote.
- Neither wall button nor remote works: The issue is with the opener unit itself or a safety condition preventing operation.
- Wall button works but door doesn't move: The door is likely disconnected from the trolley (see below), or there's a mechanical problem preventing movement.
Manual Disconnect (Red Rope)
The red rope hanging from the opener rail is the manual disconnect. If it's been pulled — intentionally or accidentally — the door is no longer connected to the opener. The opener will run but nothing moves. To reconnect, pull the rope back toward the motor unit until the carriage clicks into the drive mechanism, or simply open and close the door manually to re-engage it.
When the Opener Runs But the Door Doesn't Move
You hear the motor. The opener sounds like it's working. But the door stays put.
- Trolley disconnected — as described above, pull the rope back toward the motor to reconnect the carriage. This is the most common cause.
- Broken spring — if a spring has broken, the door's weight exceeds what the opener can handle. The motor may run briefly then trip its overload protector. Listen for unusual strain in the motor sound. If you suspect this, stop operating the opener — continued attempts can burn out the motor.
- Stripped drive gear — inside most residential openers, a plastic drive gear meshes with the drive sprocket. After years of use (or abuse from running against a broken spring), this gear strips and you'll hear the motor running with a clicking or free-spinning sound. Drive gear kits are available for most major brands and cost less than a full opener — a technician can confirm and replace.
Opener Flashing Lights or Refusing to Close
If the opener flashes its lights in a pattern before or after a failed operation — or if it opens fine but won't close — it's communicating a specific fault. The pattern (number of flashes) is documented in your opener's manual.
The most common cause of a door that won't close is safety sensor failure:
- The photo-eye sensors at the bottom of the tracks must maintain alignment and a clear beam path. Both indicator lights should be solid — typically green on one side, amber on the other.
- A blinking light on either sensor means they've lost alignment.
- Wipe the sensor lenses with a dry cloth — spiderwebs and dust are common culprits.
- Loosen the sensor bracket, point it directly at its partner, and retighten. Both lights should go solid.
- If one sensor is pointing skyward or has been physically bent, it may need replacement rather than realignment.
Brand-Specific Notes
LiftMaster and Chamberlain (Chamberlain Group)
LiftMaster and Chamberlain are the same parent company's brands and share most components and protocols. They're the most common opener brands in North America.
- MyQ connectivity issues: On WiFi-enabled models, the most common complaint is the app showing the door as offline or unresponsive. Before assuming a hardware fault, check your home WiFi connection and the MyQ hub status. The door itself usually works fine from the wall button and remote even when the app connection drops.
- Error code 4-2 (the most common service blink code): indicates safety sensor obstruction or misalignment. Clean and realign before calling.
- LED bulb interference: Some LED bulbs — particularly cheaper or unshielded ones — emit RF noise that interferes with the remote's signal frequency. If range suddenly got worse after changing a bulb in the garage, try removing the LED bulbs temporarily and testing. Replace with bulbs rated for garage door openers if needed.
Genie
Genie openers are widely used and generally reliable. Their "Safe-T-Beam" sensors work the same way as LiftMaster's photo eyes — a blinking indicator light means the sensors need realignment or cleaning, and the door will not close from the remote until resolved.
- Aladdin Connect (WiFi) has similar connectivity behavior to MyQ — the app can lose connection without the opener itself being at fault.
- Remote programming after power outage: Genie remotes can lose programming after extended power loss. Reprogramming is a documented 2-minute process — hold the "Learn" button on the motor unit and press the remote button following the pattern in your manual.
- Older Genie models used "intellicode" fixed-frequency remotes that aren't backward- compatible with newer units. If you need a replacement remote for an older Genie opener, verify compatibility before purchasing.
Older or Discontinued Brands
Pre-2000 openers using older fixed-code technology can be difficult to find compatible remotes for.
