The repair-vs-replace decision depends on the door's age, what the repair will cost, and how the rest of the hardware looks. There's usually a clear answer — once you know what to weigh.

When Repair Is the Right Call

Most of the time, for most doors, repair is correct. Here's when that's especially clear:

Single Component Failure on a Younger Door

A broken spring, snapped cable, or failed opener on a door that's less than 10 years old and otherwise in good shape is almost always a repair situation. The door itself has plenty of life left — the component that failed is separate from the door's structural condition.

Repair Cost Is Low Relative to Replacement

If you're looking at a $150–$350 spring replacement on a door that would cost $1,000–$2,000 to replace, repair wins clearly. The math needs to be a lot closer before replacement starts making economic sense.

The Door Is Structurally Sound

A door that's cosmetically worn but structurally intact — panels dented but connected, tracks straight, hardware functioning — can last many more years with component maintenance. The structure of the door (the panel sections and the frame they hang in) typically outlasts the mechanical components that wear.

The Damage Is Cosmetic

Minor dents, faded paint, or weathered seals don't affect function. If the door works well and you're not concerned about appearance or resale, there's no functional reason to replace a cosmetically worn door.

You Want Better Insulation or Energy Performance

Older uninsulated steel doors are among the least efficient components of a house with an attached garage. A modern insulated door (R-values of 12–16 are typical for quality residential doors) makes a meaningful difference to an attached garage's temperature — and to heating and cooling costs for rooms adjacent to the garage.

  3. Has it failed repeatedly in the past year? If yes, consider the total maintenance spend, not just the current bill.
  4. Is there structural damage beyond the immediate failure? A technician's assessment is the only way to know the difference between surface damage and structural damage.
  5. Are there compelling reasons to replace beyond economics? Energy efficiency, curb appeal, or planning to sell — these factors can make replacement the right call even when the pure repair math says repair.

For the comparison to be useful, you need rough numbers on both sides. These are broad estimates — regional variation is significant:
